Chrysler Super Bowl commercial: Was it really pro-Obama? (+video)

Some Democrats thought so after they watched the Chrysler Super Bowl commercial, which features Clint Eastwood. Some Republicans were aghast.

Was the Chrysler Super Bowl commercial a boost for President Obama?s reelection campaign? Some happy Democrats thought so after they watched the spot, which features Clint Eastwood talking tough about Detroit and the auto industry?s recovery.

?Another great Chrysler ad ? the US auto industry is back,? tweeted the Michigan branch of Mr. Obama?s reelection campaign following its broadcast just prior to the second-half kickoff.

David Axelrod, once and (likely future) top political aide to Obama's national campaign, added this tweet: ?Powerful spot. Did Clint shoot that, or just narrate it??

Some Republicans, on the other hand, were aghast. ?Agh. WTH? Did I just see Clint Eastwood fronting an auto bailout ad???? tweeted conservative pundit Michelle Malkin as the Super Bowl's second half began.

Calm down people. Sometimes an auto ad is just a promotional tool for vehicles, not another division point in the endless war of words between the political red and blue. We think ordinary voters will see the ad as a good example of a common commercial category: the corporate flag-waver.

Yes, we can see how the excitement got started. The ad is a great piece of work. Mr. Eastwood narrates in a voice hard as granite chips. He walks down a dark alley, talking about how it?s half time in the game, and half time in America, too. People are worried and out of work, and they're wondering what they?re going to do to make a comeback, because their lives aren?t a game.

?The people of Detroit know a little something about this. They almost lost everything. But we all pulled together. Now Motor City is fighting again,? says Eastwood.

Eastwood goes on to say he?s seen lots of tough eras, and in the end Americans all rallied together and found a way out. While he talks, sepia cuts of industrial activity segue into shots of moms, kids, firefighters, and so forth.

Then, suddenly, at 1 minute 27 seconds into the commercial, Eastwood emerges into the sun, and the face of the toughest octogenarian in America looms into the camera. ?All that matters now is what?s ahead. How do we come from behind? How do we come together? And how do we win?? he says.

Whoa. Images matter in ads, to point out the obvious. When that craggy visage appears, viewers aren?t thinking, ?I guess it?s great the Obama administration ushered Chrysler through a managed bankruptcy, providing temporary financing that allowed assets to be bought by Fiat.?

No, they?re thinking, ?That guy is over 80, but it looks like he could still take Eli Manning.?

The ad is selling pride, American pride. It implies that the good people of the United States rolled up their sleeves and brought the firm that controls Jeep back from the brink. It elides the fact that without government intervention, no amount of sleeve-rolling would have kept Chrysler alive.

You?ll notice that the brief shot of an actual identifiable auto in the commercial is of a Jeep, a brand whose strong sales are helping Chrysler into the black. No Fiat 500s anywhere. (Though Fiat had its own Super Bowl spot for the high-performance Fiat 500 Abarth.)

For the record, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne issued a statement saying that the Eastwood ad has ?zero political content.? And Eastwood himself is a well-known Hollywood Republican. He?s said he always votes GOP for president, although he?s yet to indicate any preference in the current race.

(AP) ? Texas financier R. Allen Stanford helped fake profits for his Caribbean bank and funnel millions of depositors' dollars to a secret Swiss bank account used for personal expenses, bribes to regulators and employee bonuses, the man who was in charge of the tycoon's books told jurors Friday.

James M. Davis, the former chief financial officer for Stanford's companies, testified the financier's bank never reported an unprofitable year because he and Stanford fabricated figures for annual reports and other documents. Prosecutors claim Stanford bilked investors out of more than $7 billion in a massive Ponzi scheme centered on the sales of certificates of deposit, or CDs, from the bank on the island nation of Antigua.

Davis, 63, said the false numbers were meant to hide the fraud and show CDs purchased by investors were doing well and the bank itself was on solid financial footing.

"Was Stanford uncomfortable with reporting too high a (profit) number?" prosecutor William Stellmach asked Davis, the prosecution's star witness.

"No," Davis said before a packed courtroom that included Stanford's mother, one of his daughters and two of the financier's ex-employees ? Gilberto Lopez and Mark Kuhrt ? who have also been indicted and are free on bond as they await trial in September.

Authorities allege Stanford used depositors' money to operate his businesses and pay for his lavish lifestyle and bribes to regulators and auditors. They also say he lied to depositors by telling them their money was being safely invested.

Stanford's attorneys contend the financier was a savvy businessman whose financial empire, headquartered in Houston, was legitimate. They have suggested Davis, who worked 21 years for Stanford, is behind the fraud.

Stanford is on trial for 14 counts, including mail and wire fraud, and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Davis said while the bank never reported an unprofitable year, it did have to report at least one unprofitable quarter to keep up the charade: the third quarter of 2001 when the 9/11 terrorist attacks happened.

"It would have been unreasonable to report a profit when world markets collapsed," he said.

Davis also testified Stanford transferred CD deposits to a secret Swiss bank account the financier had with Societe Generale. He said Stanford used the money for "real estate purchases, paying for personal expenses, beginning another company."

Davis also said Stanford had him transfer some money from the Swiss account to accounts the financier had in Houston and back to Antigua, where bribes of at least $10,000 to $15,000 were paid every three months to the top regulator on the island nation who oversaw the financier's bank. Some of the money from the secret account was used to pay employee bonuses, he said.

The Antigua regulator, Leroy King, helped tip the financier off in 2005 when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission began investigating the CD program, Davis said. Stanford help write the response King sent back to the SEC in 2006 saying his agency had found nothing wrong at the bank, he said. King has also been indicted in the case and is awaiting extradition to the U.S.

Davis testified funds from the Swiss account were also used to regularly bribe Stanford's outside auditor, C.A.S. Hewlett, who was based in Antigua, with amounts as high as $180,000. Davis said Stanford considered Hewlett "greedy" but "indispensable" to hiding the fraud.

Stanford worried about Hewlett's health and even brought him to Houston for a physical exam, he said. When Hewlett died in January 2009, Stanford said "he was the lucky one," Davis told jurors. Authorities took over Stanford's companies the following month.

Davis pleaded guilty to three fraud and conspiracy charges in 2009 as part of a deal he made with prosecutors in exchange for a possible reduced sentence. His testimony, which started Thursday, is scheduled to continue Monday.

Stanford was once considered one of the United States' wealthiest people, with an estimated net worth of more than $2 billion. He's been jailed without bond since being indicted in 2009.

Norwegian Cruise Line asks kids and parents to name its new youth ...

Norwegian Cruise Line announced today that it is seeking the help of parents and kids to name its new Youth and Teen programs. The company today launched the ?Up2YOU? naming contest inviting cruisers to submit names for the company?s youth and teen programs, along with names for each of the new age groups.

The contest runs from today through February 13, 2012 and the winners who name the new kids or teen program will receive a seven-day Caribbean cruise for a family of four. Those who submit the winning names for the six age groups within the new programs will receive a $100 American Express gift card. Norwegian announced earlier this month that it is revitalizing its current youth program and will implement a new best in class program fleet wide beginning on Norwegian Gem in mid-February and rolling out to all of the line?s Freestyle Cruising ships subsequently.

?We want to ensure that we have the best youth programs at sea for the more than 150,000 children and teens that sail with us each year,? said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line?s chief executive officer. ?In the spirit of Freestyle Cruising, we thought that the parents and kids who utilize the programs would be the best to suggest names for them. We are looking for lots of originality and creativity along with names that really speak to today?s kids and teens.?

To enter, contestants should head to Norwegian?s website, fill out the online entry form and submit name options for one, any, or all of the following: the new Kids program; the new Teen program; and the six new age groups: six months to two years old; three to five years old; six to nine years old; 10 to 12 years old; 13-14 years old; and 15-17 years old.

There is no maximum amount of entries per person. The contest is open to residents of the United States and Canada (excluding Quebec) 18 years of age and older or, for entrants who are younger than 18, their entries can be submitted by a parent or guardian on the entrant?s behalf. For more information on how to enter and for the official rules and details on the prizes, visit Norwegian?s website.

Norwegian?s New Youth Programs
The line?s current program, Norwegian?s Kid?s Crew in place since 1999, is being redefined to better address the skills and interests of children. The new fully developed and enhanced curriculum tailored to each age group is being produced in conjunction with The King?s Foundation and Camps, a United Kingdom-based organization that provides high quality sport and activity programs designed to make a positive impact on children. More focus will be placed on sporting activities, arts and crafts, theater and technology. Activities will change every 30 to 60 minutes depending on the age group and will be set within blocks of programming time in the morning, afternoon and evening.

Combining Positive Affirmation with EFT Tapping: The EFT Choices ...

Many people who use positive affirmations often ask if there is any way to effectively add the power of positive statements to the EFT tapping process.

The EFT Choices method was originally developed by Dr. Patricia Carrington and it is one of the most effective ways to incorporate positive statements into the use of EFT. You may find this method useful in helping you to allow yourself to make positive choices to help you move toward what you want in life.

The EFT Choices method can also help you more precisely zero-in on what you want if you are finding it difficult to clarify your desired outcome.

How to Use The EFT Choices Method

This method can also be used if you feel uncomfortable with the most well-known EFT affirmation ?I deeply and completely love and accept myself? which is used during traditional EFT. It can also be extremely useful if you feel like you (or your clients) are suffering from low self-esteem.

The standard formula for the Choices Method is 3 rounds of tapping:

Round 1: How you feel (the ?negative?) stated in a present tense

Round 2: How you?d like to feel instead (the ?positive?)

Round 3: Go back and forth alternating on each tapping point with the negative and the positive and end on a positive.

When doing the EFT Choices method, you basically tap on each of your EFT points, one by one, while focusing on the negative aspects of your issue to neutralize your problem, then continue to tap while focusing on the solution, finish up by tapping as you alternate between a negative aspect of the issue and then stating your desired positive outcome.

Begin by using the EFT Basic Recipe, or any shortcut version that you like, and for your set-up and reminder phrases use the following format:

?Even though (I have this problem), I choose (to feel better instead).? When you state ?I choose?? state a specific desire for what you want or you can add self-acceptance phrases if you like.

For example: ?Even though my hand is throbbing, I choose to have my hand be comfortable and pain free.? or ?Even though I have this (pain, trauma, or feeling), I choose to (feel/do/have this better feeling).? If you like, change the specific outcome/affirmation that follows your I choose statement to one that feels right for you.

Guidelines for ?I choose? Statements

There are a few guidelines to follow when formulating your ?I choose? statements.

First and foremost, be specific when stating the exact details (the timing, the exact color, size, the amount etc?) of your desire. It is much more effective and much more fun to create ?pulling? choices ? write them as if you were writing an ad to sell to yourself, with descriptive language that get your super excited! Go for the best possible outcome and don?t settle for just being realistic.

Always state your choices in the present tense and NEVER use the words NOT or CAN?T.

Make choices that apply to you, not what others want for you.

Don?t focus on trying to change others, instead aim to change how you feel about them. Remember, make your ?I choose? statements positive, simple and easy enough to state out loud repeatedly.

The idea behind the Choices Method is that tapping while you focus on your issue gets rid of what you don?t want, and repeating the ?I choose??statement installs what you do want into your conscious and subconscious mind while tapping away any energetic static and emotional resistance.

Give it a try and you may be suprisingly pleased with the results you get.
