Refs cheered at first NFL game following lockout

BALTIMORE (AP) ? No one is complaining that the refs cost the Cleveland Browns the game. That mere fact is a major victory for the NFL and the seven-man crew led by referee Gene Steratore, who brought official harmony back to the nation's most popular league.

Cheered from the moment they walked onto the field, the men in stripes ran a smooth and efficient game Thursday night as the NFL's lockout of officials came to an end with the Baltimore Ravens' 23-16 win over the Browns.

"To just be applauded by 50,000 people prior to anything happening, it was something that kind of chokes you up," Steratore said. "It was a very special feeling."

Sure, there were calls that made both sides unhappy. Browns coach Pat Shurmur drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for arguing an intentional grounding call, and Ravens left tackle Michael Oher could be heard raising all kinds of beef about a holding call.

But, overall, the officials kept the game in control, curtailing the chippy play and choppy pace ? not to mention the inconsistent calls ? that had marred the three weeks of games with replacement officials.

"It was great to have those guys back," Ravens running back Ray Rice said. "It looked like they knew what they were doing."

An agreement to end the lockout was reached late Wednesday after marathon negotiations, two days after a "Monday Night Football" finish brought debate over the use of the replacements to a fevered pitch nationwide.

That game ended when a 24-yard desperation pass on the last play was ruled a touchdown ? even though replays appeared to show it should have been an interception ? giving the Seattle Seahawks a disputed 14-12 victory over the Green Bay Packers.

The stage was set for something eerily similar Thursday. A fourth-down unnecessary roughness penalty on Baltimore's Paul Kruger ? a good call, given the way he shoved Cleveland's Joe Thomas after the whistle ? gave the Browns one final play from the 18-yard line.

But Brandon Weeden's 18-yard pass sailed high as time expired. No controversial ending this time.

"I thought they handled (the game) great," Cleveland coach Pat Shurmur said. "I had all the confidence in the world that this was going to be officiated in the right way."

The newfound love for the refs was evident all evening.

About an hour before kickoff, they made their first appearance on the field and heard cheers from the early arrivals. A few minutes later, Steratore was shaking hands with Shurmur near midfield and getting a hug from Ravens face-of-the-franchise Ray Lewis at the 30-yard line.

Later, when the crew returned, they received a standing ovation and doffed their caps to the crowd. One fan held up a sign that read: "Finally! We get to yell at real refs! Welcome back!"

"It was very chaotic with the replacement refs," said Karen Riley, a 44-year-old fan wearing a Rice jersey. "They couldn't control the players on either side. There were bad calls, constantly, and in some cases refs making different calls at the same time."

When Steratore then turned on his microphone to greet the captains for the pre-game coin toss, the crowd heard him say: "Good evening, men. It's good to be back."

The stadium erupted in a roar.

"You know we always pride ourselves in being a face without a name," Steratore, a 10-year league veteran, told The Associated Press about an hour before kickoff. "This will be a little different, but I don't expect it to last too long. And that's the goal ? is that we can let them get through that portion of this. It's happy to be back, it's happy to be appreciated. But then as soon as the game starts, it's happy to disappear again and let the entertainers entertain."

The deal to end the lockout is only tentative ? it must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members in a vote scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Dallas ? but both sides nevertheless went forward with the plan to have the regulars back for Thursday's game.

So Steratore hustled to Baltimore, making the 3?-hour drive Thursday morning from his home in the Pittsburgh area. He's usually in place the day before a game, but none of his regular pregame meetings had to be changed because the Browns-Ravens game was at night.

"We've had a few weeks to actually realize that this was the first September that I was home for multiple Saturdays and Sundays for almost 30 years of my life, continuously. ... It just feels completely different," Steratore said. "To be away from something that is involved with this level of professional sport, just to come back and feel that again, it doesn't take long to realize why you were missing it as much as you were missing it."

Steratore, who is a basketball official in the Big East Conference among others, also was fully aware he would be jeered the first time his crew made a questionable call ? just like always.

"Without a question," he said. "I've been yelled at by my own children many times, so this won't be any different."

Sure enough, the same fans that cheered the coin toss let out a full chorus of boos when line judge Jeff Seeman tossed his yellow flag some 20 yards to whistle Baltimore safety Bernard Pollard for a personal foul in the third quarter. Replays showed it was a good call: Pollard led with his helmet to make contact with a defenseless receiver, costing the Ravens 15 yards in a drive that led to a field goal for the Browns.

Steratore's crew nearly made a misstep in the first quarter, incorrectly spotting the ball by 2 yards after a misapplication of the rules following a holding call on the Browns. But two members of the crew caught the mistake and notified the referee before the next snap. A brief huddle ensued, and the ball was moved to its correct spot.

The crew made it clear it wouldn't tolerate the extra shoving and yelling after the whistle that had been frequently permitted by the replacements. Offsetting personal fouls were called on Cleveland's Johnson Bademosi and Baltimore's James Ihedigbo for extracurricular roughness on a punt return in the first quarter.

Then there was Shurmur's unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Replays appeared to validate the grounding call he was trying to contest, and the coach took responsibility for his loss of temper.

"I can't do that," Shurmur said. "It's an emotional game, and I got to make sure I keep my emotions in check."

There were 18 penalties called in the game, mostly the familiar calls for holding and false start. There were two rare ? and indisputable ? whistles for fair catch interference on punt returns, and a hands-to-the-face call on Baltimore's Kelechi Osemele was so obvious that it drew three flags.

The league's new agreement with the officials runs for eight years. Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged the ending of the Seahawks-Packers game "may have pushed the parties further along" in the talks.

"Obviously when you go through something like this it is painful for everybody," Goodell said. "Most importantly, it is painful for our fans. We are sorry to have to put our fans through that, but it is something that in the short term you sometimes have to do to make sure you get the right kind of deal for the long term and make sure you continue to grow the game."

The dispute even made its way to the campaign trail, with President Barack Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, calling Thursday "a great day for America."

"The president's very pleased that the two sides have come together," Carney said.

Happy Chocolate Milk Day!

It's a day adults and children can be excited about-- September 27 is National Chocolate Milk Day!

The decadent drink was invented by Sir Hans Sloane in 1687. Sloane, a doctor, praised the "health giving" qualities of chocolate milk.

Well, we all know that chocolate milk isn?t exactly diet food, but it can be healthier!

Try my recipe:

  • 1 glass unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 tbs. cocoa powder
  • 2 tbs. honey

Stir cocoa and honey together. I usually make this in a larger batch and place in a plastic bottle similar to a store-bought chocolate syrup container. You can reuse an empty store-bought bottle as well.

Pour this mixture into milk, stir vigorously and voila! Deliciousness!

Almond milk has less sugar, fat and calories than cow?s milk, with more calcium and protein. The nutty flavor also just tastes great.

Chocolate milk can be also be made by adding a sweetened chocolate syrup in milk.

Romney talks polls, 'character assassination,' and Mass. health law

Mitt Romney took part in three network TV interviews Wednesday night that veered in wildly different directions.

With ABC, Romney addressed polls that show him trailing President Obama, with NBC he promoted the Massachusetts health law that was a model for the national law he has pledged to repeal, and with CBS he accused the Obama administration of "character assassination." Addressing polls, Romney told ABC's David Muir that "Frankly at this early stage, polls go up, polls go down." And he pointed to the first presidential debate - one week from tonight - as a potential turning point in the race.

Read more about that here .

Asked by NBC News how he can "better connect with Americans," he referred to the universal health care law he signed into law as Governor of Massachusetts. Romney has only rarely referred to the Massachusetts law, which Democrats used as a model for the national health reform law - Obamacare - that Romney has pledged to repeal.

"I think throughout this campaign as well, we talked about my record in Massachusetts, don't forget - I got everybody in my state insured," Romney said. "One hundred percent of the kids in our state had health insurance. I don't think there's anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record."

Romney also referenced his church, another rarity during the campaign, although members of his Mormon congregation were featured prominently as character witnesses at the Republican National Convention.

"I think people have the chance, who watched our Republican convention, to see the lives that I've had a chance to touch during my life, to understand that as I served as a pastor of a congregation with people of all different backgrounds and economic circumstances that I care very deeply about the American people, people of different socio-economic circumstances," Romney told NBC.

Separately, in an interview with CBS News, Romney suggested the Obama campaign has engaged at times in "character assassination" against him.

He was asked by CBS News' Jan Crawford about conservatives who say he should be more aggressive and whether he will be in the coming month.

"This is a campaign, not about character assassination, even though that's what I think has come from the Obama camp by and large," he said.

"Do you think the Obama camp engaged in character assassination?," asked Greenberg.

"Oh yeah, sure, they try and completely misrepresent my point of view, along with why I'm in this race, but I think fundamentally the American people are interested in who can make their life better," he said. "Who can make people get better jobs and better incomes. And I can. He's proven that he does not have the capability to do that. I do, I've proven that throughout my career. I think that's what it's going to come down to, so I listen to a lot of advice but frankly I'm going to keep on my message, which is I know how to get this economy going, create jobs, more take home pay for the American people."

Horses, rhinos come to air cargo's aid in recession

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Milano de Flore, waiting dozily at Frankfurt airport for a flight to Buenos Aires after competing in the London Olympics, had no idea how important he is to the air freight business.

That is because he is a horse - one of the many millions of live animals whose transport by air has helped operators cushion the ups and downs of the air cargo sector in the past few years with lucrative specialty freight business.

"It's stayed relatively constant throughout the crisis. There's hardly any volatility like with usual freight. People just love animals," Axel Heitmann, head of Lufthansa Cargo's Animal Lounge in Frankfurt, told Reuters.

And like other kinds of speciality freight - such as pharmaceuticals that have to stay cold, perishables like flowers or valuables like gold - animal cargo is more profitable than general freight.

Larger animals in particular - such as dolphins bound for a water park in Dubai, giant pandas on their way to a new home in Paris or thoroughbred race horses - offer carriers hefty margins.

Lufthansa Cargo, the freight arm of Germany's leading airline Deutsche Lufthansa transports around 100 million live animals per year, almost as many as the number of passengers served by parent Lufthansa.

That number does however include 3,000 tonnes of worms to be used as fishing bait and a lot of tropical fish, Heitmann said.

ABSOLUTELY PROFITABLE

At around 30 million euros ($39.4 million) in annual sales, Lufthansa Cargo's live animal business is still small, compared to its overall sales of 1.4 billion. But it's "absolutely a profitable business," Heitmann said.

Lufthansa invested at least 10 million euros in a new 4,000 square metre animal facility, the Animal Lounge opened in 2008, when its old facilities reached capacity and it was having to turn down business.

Lufthansa Cargo expects its animal business to grow revenues by about 3-4 percent this year, Heitmann said. That compares with a fall of 9.2 percent in volumes for Lufthansa Cargo's overall business in the first six months of the year.

Animals have been transported by air since the early 1930s.

In Germany, the demand for moving pets via planes was driven in the early days by army personnel, who wanted to take their dachshunds back with them to the United States.

Nowadays few airlines transport live animals because there are very strict regulations on the facilities they need to offer and how animals should be treated to keep them safe and well.

GIRAFFES RISK HEART ATTACKS, RHINOS NEED SEDATION

Zoo animals are often especially challenging because they may be especially large, fragile or poisonous. Rhinoceroses, unsurprisingly, have to be sedated throughout the flight.

"You don't want such a large animal lumbering about in flight," Lufthansa's Heitmann said.

And giraffes are so sensitive and at such risk of heart attacks that they have to gradually get used to rising noise levels on the plane before taking off.

But the dangers of transporting animals are worth it for those cargo carriers that are willing to make the investment.

KLM Cargo, part of Air France-KLM, which ships animals ranging "from bumblebees to giraffes and from guppies to horses", says it has seen no declines in demand for animal cargo in the crisis.

Industry-wide, demand for overall air freight meanwhile declined by 2.8 percent in the seven months through July this year, according to airline industry body IATA.

Horses like the 12-year-old stallion Milano de Flore, who placed 64th at the London Olympics, are a particular growth area for cargo carriers. This is due to the popularity of events such as the Spruce Meadows show-jumping in Canada and relatively new tournaments, including the Dubai World Cup.

Data from the Federation Equestre Internationale, the international body governing equestrian sport, shows a marked rise in events over the last four years. Since 2008, the start of the financial crisis, the number of annual events has jumped 34 percent.

"Given the growing popularity of equestrian sport worldwide, we expect the number of FEI competitions at all levels to continue growing," a spokeswoman for the federation said.

Cargolux, a freight-only carrier that flies up to 3,000 horses a year, recently invested in new horse containers that allow it to carry as many as 78 horses per flight on its Boeing 747-400 freighters, or 90 on the new 747-8F.

PRICE NO OBJECT?

Growth of animal cargo "is not necessarily linked to economic factors," Hiran Perera, Senior Vice President - Cargo Planning & Freighters at Dubai-based Emirates, said.

Animals flown on cargo aircraft can be very valuable, and owners are much more concerned with safety and reliability than with how much the trip will cost.

Air freight is generally more popular for transporting valuable goods such as gold or pharmaceuticals than ships or trucks. Air cargo accounts for just over a third of goods transported around the world by value but only about 0.5 percent of the tonnage, according to data from IATA.

It can cost anywhere between 5,000-8,000 euros to transport a horse from Europe to North America, compared with around 800 euros for a medium-sized dog.

Unlike pets such as cats and dogs, horses do not fit in the hold of regular passenger planes, which are only 1.60 metres high, and so have to fly on freight aircraft and require special containers that can fit up to three horses side-by-side.

If no horses are booked for the return trip, the container has to be flown back empty, which the cost of the shipment needs to cover as well.

Emirates has been transporting horses since 2001 and in April this year brought 70 of them from Oman to Britain for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, a record number for the company.

"Pet and horse transportation has increased. It's partly because of the aircraft that we have and the fact that we've invested in all of this. It's beginning to pay off," Perera said.

Perera said Emirates has worked with aircraft maker Boeing to ensure the 777 freighter planes it was buying would be suitable for the shipment of animals as well as other cargo.

Such planes may require, for instance, heating as well as seats for grooms that travel with the animals.

On one of its 777s, Emirates flew thoroughbred horses from Sydney to upstate New York in 2010 - its longest non-stop cargo flight ever at 17.5 hours - and says the horses may have been worth more than the aircraft on which they were travelling.

A 777 Boeing freighter is worth $280 million at list prices, while a thoroughbred racehorse can cost hundreds of thousands or even tens of millions of dollars.

How to set up and use Notification Center's Do Not Disturb mode

How to use Do Not Disturb for Notification Center on iPhone and iPad

While Notification Center is a great tool for receiving alerts on your iPhone and iPad, some times notification turns into interruption. That's where the new iOS 6 Do Not Disturb feature comes in. It allows your iPhone or iPad to continue to collect notifications without beeping, buzzing, or lighting up the lock screen. Whether you're in a meeting or want a peaceful night's sleep, Do Not Disturb can give you it.

How to enable Do Not Disturb

You can quickly enable Do Not Disturb at any time to mute notifications and alerts until you're ready to let them start beeping and buzzing again.

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. settings_do_not_disturb
  3. Find the Do Not Disturb toggle and turn it to On.
  4. settings_do_not_disturb_on

How to customize Do Not Disturb settings

By default, the Do Not Disturb feature will still allow calls from Favorites or from anyone who calls twice in rapid succession. However, you can easily customize this to something that better suits your situation.

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. settings_do_not_disturb
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Tap Do Not Disturb.
  5. nc_general_settings
  6. Under Allow Calls From you can choose to allow calls from only Favorites, no one, or all calls. Choose the option you'd like and then go back to the previous screen by tapping Do Not Disturb in the upper left hand corner.
  7. do_not_disturb_calls
  8. The Repeated Calls option allows you to turn on or off repeated calls. This means that if the same person calls back within three minutes of the original call, the call will go through without being silenced the second time. If you want this feature turned off, tap the slider to Off.
  9. do_not_disturb_settings

How to schedule Do Not Disturb

If you have regular times each day that you don't want to be bothered with notifications, you can enable Do Not Disturb to automatically turn on every day at the same time. This is a nice feature to use at night so Messages, Facebook, phone calls, Twitter, and other notifications don't disturb you while you're trying to sleep.

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. settings_do_not_disturb
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Tap Do Not Disturb.
  5. nc_general_settings
  6. Tick the slider to On under the Scheduled option.
  7. do_not_disturb_settings
  8. Tap on the From/To section and choose the times you'd like Do Not Disturb to be regularly activated for every day.
  9. Do not disturb schedule

That's it. Do Not Disturb will activate on its own every day at the times specified.

How to quickly tell if Do Not Disturb is active

If you're worried that you might accidentally turn on Do Not Disturb mode, or that you might forget it's been automatically scheduled, and you'll miss an important alert, iOS 6 makes it easy to tell at a glance whether Do Not Disturb is active or not.

Simply look at the status bar at the top of your iPhone and if you see a little crescent moon icon, Do Not Disturb is on. If you don't, Do Not Disturb is off.

Search Engine Marketing: An Overview | Backlinkarticles

As the amount of websites continues to maximize since the 1990s, search engines started attracting customers to find information in just a single click. SEM made the use of online business web theme in financing solutions like pay-per-click (PPC) programs. In 1996, Open Text introduced many different PPC programs to adopt SEM to a totally new level. Two years in the future, GOTO was also created to expand the use of Search engine marketing in putting up an organization. In 2001, Askjeeve purchased GOTO?s rights which will paved way for gaining ?payment-based? search opportunities with regard to advertisers (Yahoo! Search engine marketing). Google meanwhile started off offering advertisements around 2000 via the google search results page ?Google AdWords?. As of 2008, PPC programs have already been making a name in the profession as money-makers. In 2009, Microsoft and Yahoo released their forging of any alliance that was straight away approved by the US along with European regulators on February 2010.

SEM is apparently a wider self-control incorporated with SEO. It usually includes organic Search engine marketing results and paid search results. SEM takes advantage of AdWords for advertising, article submissions and Website positioning utilization. A ?keyword analysis? is practiced for both SEM together with SEO, although they are not necessary to use in some instances. Both must be observed at close range for frequent improvements reflecting web routines.

In several contexts, SEM is exclusively used to yield PPC advertising, specially in marketing communities as well as industrial advertising which have vested significance involving online marketers. Such using SEM in Pay per click ads excludes your wider SEM field by engaging in additional SEM forms just like ?Search Engine Retargeting?.

Social Media Marketing (SMM) is a kind of search engine marketing that involves any exploitation of social media inside influencing consumers. Amongst SMM?s theoretical advances is the Sem Management (SEMM) which is regarded relatable to various SEO activities ? except that that primarily focuses on investment returns management rather than relevant web traffic making over certain popular SEO cases. SEMM gets the capability to integrate natural SEOs while seeking to gain payable ways of getting into the top of serps.

The issue of paid out search advertisements on google pages has been the point of researches in addition to studies. In The year 2002, the Federal Trade Commission?s Customer Web Watch granted a letter stating any leakage of settled advertisements on search engines. A letter was in reply to a complaint submitted by the consumer aid group, Commercial Aware.

SEM once became a subject of disputes search engine marketing after it was connected to trademark infringement issues. In 2009, Google adjusted their search engine insurance plan that prohibited Web optimization and SEM practices only to allow the get-togethers to bid on unique branded requisites. Within February 2011, Yahoo started penalizing companies that are generally purchasing links www.searchenginemarketingcanada.ca without SEO management.

EJ Manuel Delivers Career Night At Perfect Time As Florida State Tops Clemson

Sept 22, 2012; Tallahassee, Florida, USA; Florida State Seminoles quarterback Ej Manuel (3) during the game against the Clemson Tigers at Doak Campbell Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Melina Vastola-US PRESSWIRE

Last Monday, EJ Manuel was asked what it would mean to him to have a signature moment in Saturday?s top-10 matchup with Clemson.

"It would be huge," Manuel said. "The fact that there?s so much buildup going into the game is something that you grow up as a kid wanting to be a part of."

Signature moment? Check. Manuel?s performance against Clemson was indeed the type of game kids grow up dreaming about having on a big stage. The often-maligned senior delivered arguably the finest game of his career on one of the biggest stages he?s faced Manuel racked up a staggering 482 total yards (380 passing, 102 rushing) on the night in Florida State?s 49-37 victory. That made Manuel the first Florida State quarterback to pass for 300+ and run for 100+ since a Mr. Charlie Ward did the same against Maryland all the way back in 1992.

Manuel?s importance against Clemson went beyond the numbers too, as he also played a key leadership role in keeping the Seminoles grounded when they fell behind amidst a mistake-laden first half.

"He was just telling us, ?don?t get too hyped?", said Kelvin Benjamin. "He was real calm. I?ve never seen him like that.

"He just kept everybody up, kept everybody into the game," said Rashad Greene. "Made sure no one got down or sidetracked about things not going right."

Between Manuel?s arm and legs, things ultimately ended up going Florida State?s way, despite the errors committed in the first half and early third quarter. The Seminoles racked up 667 yards of offense against a Clemson defense that struggled to get any traction. That marked the third time in four games that Florida State has broken the 600 yard mark as an offense in 2012.

    Star-divide

"I told the guys early on in practice, that we were going to have to score points," Manuel said. "Those guys are really good on offense."

Manuel?s teammates said they knew that their leader had it in him to turn in this type of performance. It came at a great time for him after his performance was one of the few aspects that fans had concerns about in last week?s blowout win over Wake Forest.

"I?ve been very tired of people [saying] ?oh you know, EJ, can y?all do it, EJ is inconsistent,?" James Wilder Jr. said. "EJ is one of the hardest working guys on the team. I think he shut everybody up."

While it will take more strong performances like this one to keep skeptics quiet, there?s no doubt that Manuel gave few reasons to question him and his offense on Saturday. The senior kept up his usual level of efficiency passing the ball, connecting at 77.1% (27-35). He also showed the ability to get the ball downfield effectively and make more dynamic plays, most notably on a beautiful 29-yard touchdown pass to Rodney Smith that gave Florida State its first lead of the night.

Manuel?s dream night also ended up netting him a new career-high in passing yards as he shattered his old personal best of 329 yards before the end of the third quarter. The difference in the moments can?t be overlooked either, as Manuel?s previous high came last September, against lowly Charleston Southern.

While the questions about Manuel haven?t necessarily been unfair at times, it?s hard to deny that Saturday represented a big moment and a step forward for the senior. It could be argued that Manuel entered without a true signature moment or game in his career, but after he left Doak Campbell Stadium with a big win and career night in tow, he?s got one. If Florida State receives more games like this one, 2012 could finally be the year that the Seminoles deliver on their considerable hype. To put it in perspective, Florida State allowed Clemson to amass 426 yards, recover two fumbles, and inflicted 81 yards worth of penalties on itself, but still held a three-score lead in the 4th . The offense was simply that effective. In 2011, that many mistakes would have been a recipe for disaster.

While the reserved Manuel was hesitant to call it a signature moment for himself, even he acknowledged it was a special night.

"It was probably the best game I?ve had statistic wise, the first game where we?ve really thrown the ball and gotten a lot of yards so it was a big game for us," Manuel said. "Nothing changed, just the moment, it was time to get it done and that?s what we did."

"That was great," Chris Thompson said of his quarterback?s breakout. "I am very happy for EJ because he prepares to be great every single day. I am really excited for him. I just hope this performance pushes him to keep going and do even better."

Florida State opponents have to be hoping just the opposite. If Manuel gets better from here, playing the Seminoles won?t be a fun proposition for the rest of this season.

Mom furious male vice principal spanked her daughter

    By NBC News staff

A Texas mother is furious that male vice principal left her daughter bruised and blistered after a spanking, which the girl opted for over another day of in-school suspension for cheating in class.

Taylor Santos, a sophomore at Springtown High School, northwest of Fort Worth, Texas, told school officials?that she didn?t know another student had copied her classwork, but school officials gave both girls two days of in-school suspension as punishment.

After serving one day, Taylor said she didn?t want to miss any more classes, so she went to the vice principal?s office and opted instead for a paddling ? a legal form of punishment in schools in Texas and 19 other states,?according to the?Center for Effective Discipline.?

Because school policy says spanking or paddling requires that parents give permission, the vice principal had Taylor call her mother, Anna Jorgensen, who gave her approval.

"I knew school policy was females swatted females and males swatted males,? Jorgensen told WFAA-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth.??If Taylor wanted that, I said that would be fine.?

Stay informed with the latest headlines; sign up for our newsletter

But what happened instead was the vice principal himself swatted Taylor while a woman was present in the room, despite school policy that states ?corporal punishment shall be administered only by an employee who is the same sex as the student."?

After learning who did the spanking and seeing the wounds on her daughter's body, Jorgensen said she was horrified.

"I came unglued," Jorgensen said. ?It looked almost like it had been burned and blistered, it was so bad,? she said of her daughter?s bottom, adding that she took photos of injuries to prove how red they were.

Jorgensen called the vice principal to complain, but he told her it was perfectly normal for her daughter?s bottom to look like that. He reportedly added that he wasn?t aware of the school?s same-sex swatting policy.

Watch the most-viewed videos on NBCNews.com

Springtown Superintendent Mike Kelley told WFAA that school officials never administer corporal punishment unless a parent requests it. While he declined to speak on Taylor?s case specifically, he stressed that two adults are always present when corporal punishment is administered, but he said the school district may have made an error.

WFAA reported that Kelly wants to do away with the current policy because the male-to-female ratio of administrators at the school makes it a difficult policy to adhere to. He will reportedly ask the school board to get rid of the same gender requirement at a board meeting Monday.?

For her part, Jorgensen said she will be in attendance at that meeting to urge the school board to keep the gender-based policy.

"I think Taylor is proof that we need to keep that policy," Jorgensen said. "I don't believe a man intentionally meant to do that to her, but it still happens, because men are too big and strong to be hitting 96-pound girls."

More than 220,000 school children nationwide were subjected to physical punishment during the 2005-2006 school year, according to the Center for Effective Discipline, citing the most recent figures available.

At one school in Florida,?the woodshop class at?Holmes County High School?actually makes the paddles used to spank any of the more than 500 students.?

In another Florida town, east of Tallahassee, townfolkd make paddles out of plexiglass for?Madison?County Central's elementary and middle school, the dean of schools said.

In Eagle Ford shale play, a changing role for South Texas, residents

    By Asher Price

? To the naked eye, life here, in the heart of a historic, innovative energy boom, appears little different from what it might have been even a half-dozen years ago. But in ways small and large, the influx of money and people mostly men is changing life in Gonzales.

This is the face of a central portion of the Eagle Ford shale play, which stretches roughly 50 miles wide and 400 miles long in a sweep across some of South Texas' historically poorest counties. The last drilling boom-and-bust in these parts ended in the 1980s. Now, with the innovation of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, the natural gas fields are reopened.

The gas boom could not have been better timed, saving many in these rural counties from the harsh drought that choked much of Texas. The land in Gonzales, long the setting for hard lives tending cattle and poultry, has given rise to stories of ranchers getting rich as quickly as it has given rise to the natural gas flares that illuminate a clear Texas night. There's the tale of the elderly woman who made her way to a bank in nearby Shiner to cash her first royalty check from the company drilling beneath her land.

"I'm sorry, ma'am," the teller told her after inspecting the check. "I can't cash that."

"Well, let me see the bank manager then," she said.

"I'm sorry, ma'am, we can't cash that," the bank president then repeated.

"But surely you have the $15,000 on hand," she said.

"I'm sorry, ma'am, but that check's for $1.5 million," he told her.

The central courthouse square, like so many Texas towns, remains sleepy. But a steady stream of landmen pour in and out of the Gonzales County clerk's annex to inspect title records.

Another sign of changed times: The merchandise on sale at Indie's Southern Style, a boutique specializing in women's cosmetics and zebra-striped purses, now includes the $64 fire-retardant Wrangler shirts popular among the roughneck set.

    Working for wealth

The first drilling of Eagle Ford wells was in 2008 in La Salle County, and since then, energy companies have poured in resources and manpower to mine the gas, trapped in a layer of shale 250 feet thick and 65 million years old. In fracking, millions of gallons of water, mixed with sand and chemicals, are injected into rock to extract natural gas. The Eagle Ford shale is 4,000 to 12,000 feet below ground.

Like a vortex, the opportunity to make cash has pulled workers from other sectors and other regions.

In DeWitt County, just south of Gonzales County, the county judge reports a dip in jail staffers, and more sheriff's deputies are unwilling to work overtime because of more lucrative employment in the gas fields. A billboard on U.S. 183 South in Luling advertises gas companies seeking drivers with commercial driver's licenses. Starting pay for those jobs has jumped in South Texas from $37,000 a year to $50,000 a year, said Noel Smith, director of the St. Philip's Truck Driving Training School in San Antonio.

RV parks, proliferating like wildflowers on the edges of shale towns, are now home to welders, pipe fitters and drivers from as far away as the Dakotas.

Despite concerns about fracking's potential for groundwater contamination and the pollution of skies above rig operations, hydraulic fracturing in Texas is unlikely to go away even as a booming gas economy could go bust, just as previous booms have rocked this and other parts of the state.

For now, though, the industry and the state are flush with cash. Texas Comptroller Susan Combs reported earlier this month that for fiscal year 2012, which ended Aug. 31, the state collected more than $44 billion in tax revenue, $3.7 billion more than she had projected in December. A big boost came from oil and natural gas production taxes, the result of feverish drilling and fracking activity in West Texas' Permian Basin and the Eagle Ford shale.

Combs' office reported that oil and gas production taxes together came in about $1 billion, or 39 percent, higher than projected, and the industry also contributed heavily to strong sales tax collections, which were up 12.6 percent from the previous year.

In a further signal of the influence of the wealth created by the boom, Texas environmentalists have set only modest goals for the regulation of drilling. In other states, environmentalists have had more success in stymieing natural gas drilling, drawing links between the practice and underground water contamination. New York state has gone so far as to put a drilling moratorium in place.

GOP: Obama has failed to address deficit

The United States is in financial trouble, but President Barack Obama says the federal debt ?is nothing to worry about,? a Senate Republican charged Saturday.

Presenting the GOP?s weekly address, Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama said ?the American people see the financial chaos. They know it must stop,? The Hill reported.

Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee., said the president had failed to rally the country to deal with the problem.

?Instead, he says our debt course is nothing to worry about,? Sessions said. ?He continues to insist that his budget plan will pay down the debt.?

Sessions said the president?s budget reduction plan provides for no surplus, which was needed to pay down the debt.

?Despite $1.8 trillion in new taxes, his budget increases our spending and debt every year, adding $11 trillion to the debt overall,? he said.

The administration has previously rejected such claims. The White House website says, ?Since his first day in office, President Obama has focused on laying the foundation for an economy built to last???creating jobs for American workers, cutting taxes for middle class families and small businesses, investing in education, manufacturing and American-made energy, and making sure everyone plays by the same rules, from Main Street to Wall Street.?

Sessions charged Senate Democrats ?have deliberately violated the legal requirement to produce a budget plan? for a third year in a row, examiner.com reported.

With an eye on the November elections and the potential to shift control of the Senate to the GOP, Sessions claimed that ?if given the chance, Republicans will get this government under control.?

iPhone 5 / iOS 6 app update roundup: new versions for a taller world

iPhone 5 iOS 6 app roundup what's big, what's new

Call it a hunch, but we suspect that at least a few of you picked up an iPhone 5 today, or at least made the leap to iOS 6. If you're in either position, you may be wondering just what apps to feed Apple's flagship (or that fresh new firmware) once it's ready to go. We've got a quick-hit list of titles that have been updated to take advantage of the tall display and new OS that go beyond Apple's own work. The biggest upgrades of the lot come from keynote darling CNN as well as Flipboard: both have done more than add extra columns on the iPhone 5, offering an interface you won't see on any mere 3.5-inch iPhone. Some bread-and-butter apps have made the launch week cut as well, such as Facebook and Twitter.

There's even more if you're willing to dig deep. Third-party Twitter client Tweetbot beat the official app to the punch by days, and we've likewise spotted updates to Evernote, its rival Remember the Milk and Yelp. We know some apps aren't fully iPhone 5- or iOS 6-native -- Instagram, for example, and most anything from Google -- but it's apparent that the holdouts are increasingly the exception, rather than the rule. Did you catch any other noteworthy apps that received a boost in recent hours? Let fellow owners know in the comments.
