PRAGMATIC CAPITALISM ? The Rise of Macro Investing

Here?s an excerpt from a recent research piece published at Orcam (read the full piece here). Obviously, with my macro focus and an entirely new company designed around this macro focus, I?ve made a big bet on the future. And I think there are few things changing the landscape of investing more than the trend towards global macro investing.

Among the big trends I see coming is the diversification of corporations across the globe. As developed economies mature and emerging economies demand superior living standards there is a massive convergence occurring that is becoming increasingly expedited by technology and globalization. This is diversifying corporations, broadening customer bases and bringing supply and demand together in a way that has never before been scalable. This can best be seen in the growth in S&P 500 revenues where the trend is quickly changing towards a global S&P 500. I presume the day will come when the vast majority of S&P 500 profits will no longer come from within the USA. In fact, if we become a truly global economy then one day we should expect the overwhelming majority of S&P 500 revenues to come from abroad:

?S&P 500 corporations are no longer just US companies. They are increasingly global corporations. This is
a trend that is becoming more and more pervasive. 2015 is likely to be the ?rst year where most of the S&P 500?s revenues were generated from foreign countries. As emerging markets become increasingly developed and developed economies continue to mature we?re likely to see this convergence continue.

The USA, for instance, currently represents 23% of global GDP, but US corporations are generating 46% of their revenues from abroad. It?s not unreasonable to assume that the natural trend for S&P 500 revenues
is towards something in the 70-80% range as the developed economies mature and corportiaons reach out to higher growth revenue sources. There is a huge growth opportunity that domestic corporations
are still only partially taking advantage of. This means US markets are becoming international markets. In other words, US assets are becoming international assets.?

(AP) ? A 30-year-old Seattle man was killed and another man wounded in a shooting at a crowded bar in Bellevue, Wash., early Monday, police said.

The shooting broke out just after 1 a.m. at Munchbar at Bellevue Square, an upscale shopping center about 10 miles east of Seattle, said Carla Iafrate, a spokeswoman for the Bellevue Police Department.

Police officers were outside the bar when gunfire erupted because a large crowd had gathered there, she said.

More than 600 people were inside the venue at the time of the shooting. "It was a very complicated scene," Iafrate said.

The wounded man was taken to Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue. Iafrate did not immediately know his age, hometown or condition.

The shooting appears to be an isolated incident. "There was some type of altercation," before the shooting happened, she said. No one has been arrested, and investigators were trying to put together a description of the shooter, she said.

No officers were involved in the shooting.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, telling local media they dove for cover or hit the floor when they heard gunshots.

The shopping center opened Monday morning as normal, Iafrate said, adding that the shooting had minimal impact on overall operations.

Markets flat in holiday-thinned trading

LONDON (AP) ? Financial markets were largely steady in holiday-thinned trading Monday though concerns remain over the progress of U.S. budget discussions and the future of the economic reform program in Italy.

For weeks, the discussions between the White House and Congress over a budget deal have been the main driver in markets. If a deal isn't agreed to by the start of 2013, automatic spending cuts and tax increases worth hundreds of billions of dollars will be imposed ? which many economists think could push the U.S. economy back into recession.

The prevailing view has been that a deal would be agreed to in time but as the deadline nears there are growing doubts over whether the U.S. will be able to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff."

"The reality is given that the U.S. government is now closed for the holiday break the likelihood of anything other than soothing procrastination is highly unlikely much before the Jan. 1 deadline," said Michael Hewson, senior market analyst at CMC Markets.

Doubts over the progress of discussions prompted a fairly sizeable sell-off last Friday though many analysts still think there will be agreement on some sort of short-term measures.

"Even if this stopgap measure is implemented it may not be enough to prevent unwanted volatility in equity markets going into 2013 as investors try and assess the adverse impact on the U.S. economy," said Neil MacKinnon, global macro strategist at VTB Capital.

Most markets across Europe are only open for half a day and will only re-open again on Thursday. German markets are closed for Christmas Eve.

With around an hour of trading to go, Britain's FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.2 percent at 5,952 while the CAC-40 in France was down an equivalent rate at 3,655.

Wall Street was poised for more marked falls at the open in what will also be a holiday-shortened trading day ? both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures were down 0.4 percent.

As well as monitoring developments in the U.S. over the coming days, investors will be keeping a close watch on what's going on in Italy ahead of a general election in February.

Over the weekend, outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti indicated that he would be willing to return to the role if pro-reform parties back him.

Over the past year or so, Monti and his technocratic government have won plaudits in the markets for their economic reforms and efforts to get a grip on the country's borrowing. Italy has the second-highest debt burden among the 17 EU countries that use the euro. Only Greece's is higher.

Earlier in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng, closed up 0.1 percent at 22,531.51 while South Korea's Kospi rose less than 0.1 percent to 1,981.82. Japanese markets were closed for the Emperor's birthday holiday.

Other financial markets were subdued too. In the currency markets, the euro was up 0.2 percent at $1.3227 while the benchmark New York oil price was down 3 cents at $88.63 a barrel.

Chuck Hagel: Have Republicans preemptively sunk another Obama nominee?

Susan Rice bailed on her secretary of state bid after GOP hectoring. Now Obama's reported pick for defense is on the ropes, too

Only a week ago, the news media was confidently reporting that President Obama was planning to nominate former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) to replace Leon Panetta as defense secretary. Now, "besieged by criticism from right and left, and considerable skepticism from his former Senate colleagues," says Michael Hirsh?at?National Journal, "Hagel appears to be following the path of Susan Rice as a trial-balloon nominee who finds himself quickly losing altitude in Washington." As with Rice, President Obama's reported first pick for secretary of state who withdrew her name from consideration amid staunch opposition from some key Republicans, the White House is "now signaling that it may soon puncture Hagel's hopes," too. Just as Rice's exit opened the door for Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) at state, Hagel's waning fortunes could be good news for Michele Flournoy, an under defense secretary in Obama's first term, or Ashton Carter, the current deputy defense secretary.?

Most of the conservative criticism of Hagel?has been over whether he's a strong enough supporter of Israel ? he once used the phrase "the Jewish lobby" ? and Tough enough on Iran. (From the left, he's facing heat over calling a Bill Clinton ambassador nominee, James Hormel, "openly aggressively gay" in 1998.) But Hagel "is also paying, in part, for his bluntness and bravery in advocating unpopular positions during his 12 years in the Senate," says National Journal's Hirsh, including his "gutsy and prescient stand against his own party and President George W. Bush in the run-up to the Iraq invasion ? and his criticism of the war's management afterwards."

SEE MORE: Is President Obama going to war against legalized pot?

It's worth noting, says John Hinderaker at Power Line, that "Hagel was not sufficiently 'gutsy' or 'prescient' to vote against invading Iraq" ? and that he wouldn't be on Obama's radar if he hadn't opposed the war. But in the end, his opposition to the Iraq War isn't the GOP's main problem with Hagel. "It's that his positions on key issues such as Iran, Israel, sequestration, and gay rights fall, in the words of Lindsey Graham, 'out of the mainstream' and, in some cases, 'well to the left of the president.'"

Graham isn't alone, says Howard Kurtz at Daily Download.?Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the other key leader of the anti-Rice coalition, suggested that fellow Vietnam vet Hagel isn't a real Republican, and an unidentified GOP senator told Politico that the Nebraska Republican is "prickly." Outgoing Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) ? the third "amigo" of Graham and McCain ? said on Sunday that Hagel would face a "a very tough confirmation process." It seems almost "quaint now," says Kurtz, but "there was a time when the Senate delivered its advice and consent for Senate nominees," using confirmation hearings to air their misgivings. Now "we have a full-fledged war over Chuck Hagel that is taking place entirely in the media," and "if the artillery shelling gets too heavy, he will go the way of Rice ? without so much as a nomination, let alone a vote."

SEE MORE: Chuck Hagel: Would it be a mistake for Obama to name another GOP defense secretary?

"Comically, the [GOP] campaign to discredit Hagel, in an attempt to create a constant drumbeat of scandal or scandal-esque news, is casting him as... a Republican," says Jonathan Chait at New York. Apparently the neoconservative attack of his dumb "Jewish lobby" statement and the alleged gay-bashing aren't doing the trick, so now conservatives are criticizing him for praising segregationist Republican Strom Thurmond as a "role model" on his 100th birthday. But "vintage nineties-era anti-gay bigotry and embrace of the most virulent segregation-era racists were completely standard positions for the Republican party during Hagel's Senate career," so calling those morally disqualifying "is a strange argument for conservatives to make."

The irony of this "character assassination by media narrative" from Republicans is that "the political logic of a Hagel appointment is to demonstrate bipartisan outreach by President Obama," says John Avlon at The Daily Beast. Hagel is, after all, a Republican, and plenty of Democrats "question the need for any outreach to Republicans at all after a decisive election victory." His opposition to the Iraq war is his "cardinal sin" among the GOP, even though it was "from the perspective of a small-government conservative and a highly decorated Vietnam vet, skeptical of the costs that come with unnecessary wars." If they would take a step back, Hagel is "a thoughtful patriot squarely in the mainstream of American foreign policy," and he deserves a proper confirmation hearing in front of his former colleagues.

SEE MORE: Secretary of State: The case for and against John Kerry

In the surreal half-light of a trial-balloon nomination, it is difficult for an individual to come to his own defense. Statements are taken out of context, and facts offered up in isolation to present a picture of someone as a quasi-monster, disfigured beyond recognition even to those who know him. The antidote is available with a little effort ? ditch the well-funded opposition research being fed to partisan pundits and instead take a look at what Hagel has written about his own beliefs... Hagel's inherent fiscal conservatism, his Ike-like focus on curbing waste and abuse in the defense budget, is uniquely suited to the challenges of our times... The questions that remain can be clarified in a Senate confirmation hearing, but the Obama administration should not allow itself to be intimidated from following through on what would be an excellent addition to a second-term cabinet that could revive the idea that "partisanship ought to end at the water's edge."

Air strike kills dozens of Syrians trying to buy bread

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Dozens of people were killed and many more wounded in an air strike that hit a Syrian bakery where a large crowd was queuing for bread on Sunday, activists said.

If confirmed, it would be one of the deadliest air strikes of Syria's civil war.

"There is no way to really know yet how many people were killed. When I got there, I could see piles of bodies all over the ground. There were women and children," said Samer al-Hamawi, an activist in the town of Halfaya. "There are also dozens of wounded people."

Rami Abdelrahman, of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, also said the death toll was still very unclear:

"From looking at the videos, I expect the death toll to be around or above 50, and not higher than 100. But for now I am keeping my estimate at dozens killed, until we have more information."

Halfaya, in the central province of Hama, had been seized by rebels last week in a push to seize new territory in their 21-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad,

Another activist said residents picking through the bodies were still determining which were wounded and which were dead.

Hamawi, who spoke via Skype, uploaded a video of the scene that showed dozens of dust-coated bodies lined up near a pile of rubble beside a concrete building with blackened walls.

Screams could be heard in the video as some men rushed to the scene on motorcycles and other residents limped away. Dozens of dead bodies could be seen.

The authenticity of the video could not be immediately verified, as the government restricts access into Syria.

Activists said more than a thousand people had been lined up at the bakery in Halfaya. Shortages of fuel and flour have made bread production erratic across Syria, and bread lines are often hours long.

Activists say more than 44,000 people have been killed in the 21 months since the eruption of anti-Assad protests, inspired by the Arab Spring revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt and elsewhere.

Western powers and some Arab countries have repeatedly demanded that Assad step down.

Mainly Sunni Muslim rebels are fighting on the edge of the capital Damascus and expanding southwards from their northern strongholds in the provinces around Aleppo and Idlib.

But Assad, who is from the Alawite minority linked to Shi'ite Islam, has branded the rebels as terrorists and responded with artillery, air strikes and - according to NATO, which is stationing anti-missile defenses in neighboring Turkey - with Scud-type missiles.

Earlier on Sunday, Syria's information minister distanced the government from comments by the vice president that neither the rebels nor Assad's forces could win the civil war.

The foreign minister of Russia, one of Syria's main allies, said on Saturday that the conflict had reached stalemate, and that Assad would not yield to international efforts to persuade him to quit.

(AP) ? Taliban representatives at a conference did not insist on total power in Afghanistan and pledged to grant rights to women that the militant Islamist group itself brutally suppressed in the past, according to a Taliban statement received Sunday.

The pledges emerged from a rare meeting last week involving Taliban and Kabul government representatives.

The less strident substance and tone came in a speech delivered at a conference in France. The French hosts described it as a discussion among Afghans rather than peace negotiations.

It was hard to determine whether the softer line taken by the Taliban representatives reflected a real shift in policy or a salvo in the propaganda war for the hearts and minds of Afghans.

The speech said that a new constitution would protect civil and political rights of all citizens. It promised that women would be allowed to choose husbands, own property, attend school and seek work, rights denied them during Taliban rule, which ended with the 2001 U.S. invasion. The speech was emailed from Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

"We are not looking to monopolize power. We want an all-Afghan inclusive government," the speech said. It was delivered by two Taliban officials, Mawlawi Shahbuddin Dilawar and Muhammad Naeem during the conference on Thursday and Friday.

Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry spokesman said the government welcomed such talks but did not expect them to bridge the gap between the warring sides.

The United States started to embrace the idea of peace talks after President Barack Obama took office, but discussions stalled in recent years, despite the formation of an Afghan government council tasked with reaching out to the Taliban and the establishment of a Taliban political office in Qatar.

"The peace initiative is a process, and one or two or three meetings are not going to solve the problems. But we are hopeful for the future," Foreign Ministry spokesman Janan Mosazai said. He said the government's preconditions for the talks with the Taliban have not changed: a cease-fire, recognition of the Afghan constitution, cutting ties with international terrorists and agreeing to respect the rights of Afghan citizens including women and children.

The Taliban speech reiterated the group's own longtime policies, declaring that the current constitution was "illegitimate because it is written under the shadow of (U.S.) B-52 aircraft" and that the Taliban remained the legitimate government of the country, a reference to the U.S.-led campaign that drove the Taliban from power.

It also called for the withdrawal of all foreign forces and said a 2014 national election was "not beneficial for solving the Afghan quandary" because it would take place while the country was still under foreign occupation.

Most NATO forces are scheduled to be withdrawn by 2014. The Kabul government and its international backers hope that a peace deal can be brokered with the Taliban and other militant groups before the pullout. NATO still has more than 100,000 troops, including 66,000 U.S. soldiers, on the ground. Washington is now determining the size of a scaled down force the United States will keep in Afghanistan after 2014.

"The occupation must be ended as a first step, which is the desire of the entire nation, because this is the mother of all these tragedies," the speech said.

The conference was also attended by the Hezb-e-Islami group, which is allied with the Taliban, and political opponents of President Hamid Karzai, whom the Taliban regard as a puppet of Washington.

The world mourns with Connecticut; gifts pour in

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? People around the world are grieving with the residents of Newtown over the murders of 26 school children and staff, offering their support by sending toys, money and other gifts.

An outpouring of tens of thousands of teddy bears, Barbie dolls, soccer balls, board games and more has come from toy stores, organizations and individuals worldwide.

"It's their way of grieving. They say, 'I feel so bad, I just want to do something to reach out,'" said Bobbi Veach, who was helping Saturday at Edmond Town Hall, where all of Newtown's children were invited to choose a toy.

After the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre Dec. 14, victims were still being buried Saturday. A service was held in Ogden, Utah, for 6-year-old Emilie Parker. Others were held in Connecticut for 7-year-old Josephine Gay and 6-year-old Ana Marquez-Greene.

The 20-year-old gunman, Adam Lanza, killed his mother earlier across town and took his own life after the school massacre. Police still don't know why he did it.

At religious services Sunday morning in Newtown, church leaders received standing ovations from parishioners they have been helping to cope with the tragedy.

"This has been the worst week of my life," said Monsignor Robert Weiss of the St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, which lost eight children and two adults in the massacre. He thanked the community for giving him strength to get through the week filled with funerals.

In a church bulletin, he urged people to go ahead and celebrate Christmas with prayers for hope, healing and peace.

"We know that some hearts in this town will be broken again on Christmas morning when that one special person is not there to open their gifts," he wrote.

The Rev. Kathleen Adams-Shepherd also received an ovation and kisses from a long line of parishioners at Trinity Episcopal Church. She offered a prayer for the 26 victims at the school as well as the gunman and his slain mother, Nancy Lanza.

Millions of dollars have poured into Newton in the aftermath of the tragedy. The United Way of Western Connecticut said the official fund for donations had $2.8 million in it on Saturday. Others sent envelopes stuffed with cash to pay for coffee at the general store, and a shipment of cupcakes arrived from a gourmet bakery in Beverly Hills, California.

The Postal Service reported a six-fold increase in mail in the town and set up a unique post office box to handle it. Some letters were addressed to the "First Responders" or just "The People of Newtown." One card arrived from Georgia addressed to "The families of 6 amazing women and 20 beloved angels." Many contained checks.

"This is just the proof of the love that's in this country," Postmaster Cathy Zieff said.

Peter Leone said he was busy at his Newtown General Store when he got a phone call from a woman in Alaska who wanted to give him her credit card number.

"She said, 'I'm paying for the next $500 of food that goes out your door,'" Leone said. "About a half hour later another gentleman called, I think from the West Coast, and he did the same thing for $2,000."

The basement of the town hall building resembled a toy store, with piles of stuffed animals, dolls, games, and other gifts. They all were inspected and examined by bomb-sniffing dogs. The children could choose whatever they wanted.

Newtown resident Amy Mangold, director of the local Parks and Recreation department, attended with her 12-year-old daughter, Cory. She acknowledged that most attendees could afford to buy their own gifts but said "this means people really care about what's happening here. They know we need comfort and want to heal."

Many people have placed flowers, candles and stuffed animals at makeshift memorials that have popped up all over town. Others are stopping by the Edmond Town Hall to drop off food, toys or cash. About 60,000 teddy bears were donated, said Ann Benoure, a social services caseworker who was working at the town hall.

Tom Mahoney, the building administrator who's in charge of handling gifts, said the town plans to donate whatever is left to shelters or other charities.

In addition to the town's official fund, other private funds have been set up. Former Sandy Hook student Ryan Kraft, who once was Lanza's babysitter, set up a fund with other alumni that has collected almost $150,000. It is earmarked for the Sandy Hook PTA.

Rabbi Shaul Praver of Congregation Adath Israel is raising money for a memorial to the victims. He said one man wrote a check for $52,000 for the project.

Several colleges, including the University of Connecticut, have set up scholarship funds for Sandy Hook students and relatives of victims.

Isabel Almeida of the local United Way said that while the town is grateful for all the support, it has no more room for gifts. She encouraged people to donate to others in memory of Sandy Hook victims.

"Send those teddy bears to a school in your community or an organization that serves low-income children, who are in need this holiday season, and do it in memory of our children," she said.

Perennial Flu Shot One Step Closer

By Christopher Intagliata
(Click here for the original article and podcast)

Every fall, you need a new flu shot. That's because today's vaccines train your immune system to recognize specific strains of flu?identified by two proteins on the virus's coat: hemagglutinin and neuraminidase. That's where the 'H' and 'N' come from in H1N1.

Problem is, those proteins are a moving target?they mutate quickly. Once they do, your immune system can't recognize them. And you've got something like the 2009 swine flu, a strain the flu shot never primed us to fight.

To make a more universal vaccine that would work year after year, researchers focused on a smaller, more stable protein called M2. In human strains, the protein has hardly changed since the 1930s.

Researchers engineered an M2 vaccine, and gave it to mice. Then they exposed the mice to lethal doses of human, swine and bird flus. All the vaccinated mice survived?their unlucky counterparts did not. The research appears in the journal Molecular Therapy. [Min-Chul Kim et al., Viruslike particles containing multiple M2 extracellular domains confer improved cross protection against various subtypes of influenza virus]

A good seasonal flu vaccine will still beat the M2 vaccine. But if the M2 gives us insurance against a surprise strain, well, it might be worth a shot.

Celebrity Baby Scoop: Jane Krakowski Talks Motherhood ...

"30 Rock" star Jane Krakowski recently partnered with Bank of America to raise thousands for Feeding America. The mom-of-one says that "giving back is such a big part of the holidays and Christmas."

Krakowski talked to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her son Bennett, 20 months, and hosting Christmas this year in his honor. She goes on to talk about the "sad goodbye" on "30 Rock" that will finish filming just days before Christmas. "They did a really great job" with the series finale and gave the "characters a beautiful send-off," she says.

Celebrity Baby Scoop: How is Bennett doing?

Jane Krakowski: He is doing really well. It is so awesome to be a new mom; it's absolutely great. Obviously this holiday time is a crazy time, because we're juggling getting Christmas ready and wrapping up "30 Rock," and being a new mom and wanting to make it all special for Bennett.

CBS: Can you tell us all about the recent charity event you attended for Bank of America?

JK: I'm was happy to work at Bank of America and have access to all these mobile apps and online tools that help me get everything done, and also make donations to charity as well. It's a great time to be giving to people who are in need.

Bank of America very generously donated a lot of money to the charity Feeding America. Through the very easy mobile app and online banking system, we had people come to the Bank of America, put a Christmas ornament on the tree, and by the touch of a button on their iPhone, iPad, or tablet, donate $250 each.

Bank of America donated $25,000 just on the day of the event, which was a larger part of a $2.5 million dollar donation to Feeding America over the whole holiday season."

CBS: Do you enjoy giving back over the holidays?

JK: Yes, for me, giving back is such a big part of the holidays and Christmas. Certainly, with "30 Rock" ending, I felt very fortunate to have had such a great job for so many years, and I think it is very nice to be able to give back to people who are in need, especially at this time.

CBS: How do you juggle your busy career and family life?

JK: I do it through organization, multi-tasking, being able to do a lot of things at once. It takes a village with lots of friends and family to help along the way. We're really lucky; Bennett is a great kid and he brings us so much joy every single day. We feel blessed every day that we have all these things to juggle at the moment.

CBS: What are your upcoming holiday plans? Is Bennett showing signs of excitement for the holidays?

JK: This holiday season, we are hosting Christmas at our house for the first time in Bennett's honor. He is the youngest child now, and I figured that the person who has the youngest child gets to throw the holiday get-together, because that is where all of the spirit of Christmas is. Christmas is, like, three days after we finish wrapping "30 Rock," so it is all a bit crazy right now.

We had fun getting the Christmas tree and we recently brought Bennett to Santa and got the classic screaming photo on Santa's lap (laughs). I also plan to get all of my Christmas shopping done. I am very excited about the mobile transfers, because I have nephews who at this point really just want cash. I am excited that I can just send them cash wherever they are, because they are all grown and at college or touring America with bands. There comes a point where they really don't want the pajamas anymore, or the perfume they haven't worn since they were 12 (laughs). They would really just like to receive cash.

In regard to whether Bennett is showing signs of excitement for the holidays, I think he is. I think he is not sure what all the festive decorations in the house mean.

CBS: What's up next for you?

JK: I don't know right now...I'm going to be a stay-at-home actress (laughs). There are lots of things in the works right now. Creatively, the bar of "30 Rock" was so high, so picking the next thing is going to be interesting.

I think we are all kind of going through that right now, and it's going to be a sad goodbye for everybody at '30 Rock." It has been such a great, great experience. I will say though, I think that the final episodes are so fantastic, and I think the writers have really given all of the characters a beautiful send-off. For the fans of the show, it will be very satisfying to them and also satisfying to the actors who are playing the characters. They really did a great job to satisfy who the characters have become over the seven seasons. I hope everyone who watches it really enjoys it!

Kim Kardashian Pregnant, Baby Bump December 2012? | Gossip Cop

Truth rating: 0

Kanye West Kim Kardashian National Enquirer

(GettyImages.com)

?Kim Kardashian got the Christmas gift of a lifetime,? begins a piece from the National Enquirer, which announces, ?She?s pregnant.?

The tabloid says the reality star showed off a ?bulging belly? in Miami on December 12, and alleges that she?s in ?the very early stages of a surprise pregnancy.?

According to a so-called ?source? for the mag, ?Kim has gained at least 1o pounds in the past few weeks, and it seems to be around her midsection.?

The purported ?insider? notes that Kardashian has ?given up alcohol completely,? and goes on to claim that she and Kanye West are ?shopping for a family-friendly home in Los Angeles together.?

Um?

First of all, Kardashian rarely drinks anyway.

Secondly, what exactly does a ?family-friendly? home consist of? A house with a lot of room? We?re pretty sure two extremely wealthy celebrities will have that regardless of their family plans.

Also, the Enquirer is the same publication that falsely claimed that Kardashian was spending $200,000 on fertility treatments to have twins, so the mag has kind of lost its credibility in reporting about her baby plans.

Regardless, a Kardashian family insider tells Gossip Cop the mag?s latest pregnancy tale is totally inaccurate.

Critique for 'Teaching ethics in accounting and the ethics of ...

Do the authors have the capability to write this thesis?

Yes the authors have the capability to write on this thesis; they have the academic experience to make authoritative claims on accounting education. Gray, et al. (1994) have passed their views across based on extensive research and personal experience. Gray, et al. (1994) won the British Accounting Association Special Interest Group Manuscript Award for writing this paper. Rob Gray the main author of this paper is now a Professor of Social and Environmental Accounting Director of the Centre for Social and Environmental Accounting Research at St Andrews has authored/co-authored over 250 books, monographs, chapters and articles (University of St Andrews School of Management website, 2011).

Issues raised by Gray, et al. (1994) in ?Teaching ethics in accounting and the ethics of accounting teaching: educating for immorality and a possible case for social and environmental accounting education?

An issue raised in this paper is that despite the current success of current accounting there is still evidence of ethical and intellectual failure among accounting practitioners (Gray, et al., 1994). The immediate blame is on the accounting educators as they have seen evidence that accounting education fails to develop students? intellectual and ethical maturity (Gray, et al., 1994). According to Gray, et al. (1994) educators do not seem to understand the consequences of not having ethics as a core content of an accounting degree; hence graduates are not prepared for employment as an accounting trainee. Along with personal experience and evidence they got from (Sterling 1973, Lehman 1988, AECC 1990, Sikka 1987) Gray, et al. (1994) suggests that university teaching practise tends to be dominated by techniques acquisition. The inadequacy of university accounting education according to Gill, (1993) is the reason why graduates are neither practically trained individuals who cannot evaluate reason conceptualize and evaluate hence cannot be immediately used in the office (Gray, et al.,1994).

Methodology: is the methodology used able to make a persuasive case?

I will go through the methodology used by Gray, et al. (1994) also bringing in other academic research that agrees, and others that bring another perspective to the issues addressed. Gray, et al. (1994) looks at educational theory and accounting education and have discovered that accounting educators have paid emphasis to teaching method but accounting literature does not emphasize the learning theory in accounting education. They have looked into the work of Shute (1979) and Ainsworth and Plumlee (1992) where Blooms taxonomy of learning is used to look at accounting education and there is evidence that students are not encouraged to progress the levels of taxonomy and may reinforce lower levels of cognition (Gray, et al., 1994). Their findings suggest that accounting education does not make students reach the highest levels of cognition evaluation which involves making judgements on materials, information and method (Ainsworth and Plumbee, 1992 as cited in Gray, et al., 1994). Gray, et al., (1994) states that ideally accounting education should be at the deep approach/deep-elaborative/transforming/formal-operational but instead it is perceived to be on a low level of Entwiste, et al., (1992) adaptation of learning approaches surface; approach/shallow-reiterative/reproducing/concrete-operational. Gray, et al., (1994) have looked at Kohlberg?s levels of ethical development and discovered with backing including (Rest, 1974, 1987; Rohatyn, 1987) age, gender, childhood, background and years in education are the most favoured determinants of ethical maturity. I have found that some researchers even believe that it is too late to teach ethics at university stage and that ethics education does not necessarily translate to ethical behaviour (Bean and Bernadi, 2007).I have found evidence from Ameen, et al. (1996) who surveyed students in upper-level accounting courses in 4 large public American universities that suggests that female accounting students are more ethically sensitive than their male counterparts. Age and gender is another perspective that should be considered when looking at the future of ethics in accounting education.

Gray, et al. (1994) find evidence that suggests that accounting education is only on the first two levels of Kohlberg?s level of ethical development which is ?Heteronomous morality? and ?Individualism and instrumentalism?. Educators should be questioned as to why accounting education is not reaching the higher levels of Kohlberg?s. Without ethics in the core curriculum it is not likely that accounting education will ever contribute to ethical development or produce what is necessary for deep learning (Gray, et al., 1994).However I have found other measures of ethics in accounting education that Gray, et al. (1994) has not looked at such as the DIT and the Mach IV scale. The Defining Issues Test (DIT) is the primary measure of ethical concern and is in most accounting ethical research (Pope, 2005). Another measure of ethics is the Mach IV it is well-validated but is not commonly used in accounting ethics research (Pope, 2005).

I have found evidence that suggests that accounting academics are less committed to ethics and ethical education is mostly restricted to discussion of professional codes of auditing courses whereas other professions like law and medicine have always had a long tradition of ethics courses (May,1994; Pallegrino, et al., 1990 as cited in Gunz and McCutcheon 1998). McNair and Milam (1993) who did a survey on 202 schools most of which were accredited by AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) found that although majority agreed that ethics should be covered more in accounting education only 8.3% believed it should be taught as a separate course. McNair and Milam (1993) study suggests that accounting education does make ethics significant, with the faculties who already incorporated ethics as part of another course only spending an average of 3.18 hours teaching it. Gray, et al. (1994) find results that reveal that business ethics courses are indeed present in some undergraduate accounting degrees, and is still growing although at a negligible rate. More recent studies form Bernadi and Bean, (2005) even suggest a three-course system for teaching ethics in accounting education including a foundation course, a general business ethics course and a discipline specific course (Bean and Bernadi, 2007).Up until recent times it has been suggested by a number of researchers that the Anglo-American accounting education constrained approach to accounting and business education to maximising shareholders wealth has limited the supposed benefits of add-on courses in business ethics (Ferguson, et al., 2011). It has been suggested that the ethical lapses resulting in the scandals that embarrassed the accounting profession notably the Arthur Anderson and Enron scandal in 2002 may be as a result of students believing that cheating is an acceptable, and perhaps necessary, form of competition (Bean and Bernadi, 2007). I am happy to have found evidence that suggests that post-Enron accounting university students are now more concerned about the corporate ethical structure of the firm they choose to work for (Esmond-Kiger, 2004).

Loeb?s goals of accounting ethics education is used to show how ethics and morality can be educated in accounting education (Gray, et al., 1994).? Gray, et al., (1994) introduce three ways without any hierarchy of accessing wrongness or action ?Cosequentionalism?, ?Motivism? and ?Deontological?. Concentration of the accounting profession lies within Consequentionalism which assesses actions by reference to the utility they generate (Gray, et al., 1994).

Possible Solutions to the issues raised by Gray et al, 1994

Gray, et al., (1994) suggests that the solution of issues they have raised may lie within social and environmental accounting which challenges much of the approach of traditional accounting education. They find that although the solution would be to incorporate ethics in accounting education the focus is also largely inseparable from (1) ethical responsibility of the teacher to seek maximum educational development in the student and (2) the apparent relationship between ethical and educational development (Gray, et al., 1994). I found evidence too that also suggests social and environmental accounting and alternative forms of accounting should be taught more to accounting students with the same level of emphasis as traditional accounting (Mathews, 1997).Students have resistance to social and environmental accounting because they do not find it to be immediately relevant and it is seen to be about ?what accounting is not? and ?what accounting can be? as opposed to ?what accounting is? (Gray, et al., 1994). I have read Webber (1990) who gives evidence that some ACCSB schools have already responded to these challenges by offering business ethics courses and the reason why more business schools may be failing to introduce ethics to their curriculum is because academic literature has failed to evaluate the effectiveness of the courses. Another possible solution to the issues raised by Gray, et al. (1994) that has not been considered in this paper is that there should be more literature that show backed up evidence that ethics in accounting education produces graduates that are more intellectually and ethically capable in their accounting trainee jobs.

Conclusion

Despite the extensive research Gray, et al, (1994) questions are left unanswered and the paper is concluded in an inconclusive way asking more questions to themselves and other accounting educators. After reading this paper and understanding the issues raised and evaluating the possible case for social and environmental education and other views from academic research I have read I have one questions for Gray, et al. (1994): With Professional Accounting Bodies like ACCA having ethics courses as a requirement to become a qualified accountant is it fair to still blame the accounting university education for the ethical and intellectual failures among accounting practitioners?

?Hinduism third largest religion of world; India home to most religions?

Washington: Hinduism is the third largest religion of the world after Christianity and Islam and 97 percent of all Hindus live in three Hindu-majority countries ? India, Nepal and Mauritius, according to a study.

India, which accounts for majority of world?s Hindus, is also home to almost all the major religions of the world, a Pew research said Tuesday.

Pew demographic study ? based on analysis of more than 2,500 censuses, surveys and population registers ? finds 2.2 billion Christians (32 percent of the world?s population), 1.6 billion Muslims (23 percent), 1 billion Hindus (15 percent), nearly 500 million Buddhists (seven percent) and 14 million Jews (0.2 percent) around the world as of 2010.

In addition, more than 400 million people (six percent) practice various folk or traditional religions, including African traditional religions, Chinese folk religions, Native American religions and Australian aboriginal religions.

Reuters

An estimated 58 million people ? slightly less than one percent of the global population ? belong to other religions, including the Baha?i faith, Jainism, Sikhism, Shintoism, Taoism, Tenrikyo, Wicca and Zoroastrianism, to mention just a few, it said.

Pew said overwhelmingly, Hindus and Christians tend to live in countries where they are in the majority.

Ninety seven percent of all Hindus live in the world?s three Hindu-majority countries (India, Mauritius and Nepal), and nearly nine-in-ten Christians (87 percent) are found in the world?s 157 Christian majority countries.

The median age of two major groups ? Muslims (23 years) and Hindus (26) ? is younger than the median age of the world?s overall population (28), it said adding that all the other groups are older than the global median.

Christians have a median age of 30, followed by members of other religions (32), adherents of folk or
traditional religions (33), the religiously unaffiliated (34) and Buddhists (34).

Jews have the highest median age (36), more than a dozen years older than the youngest group, Muslims.

Hinduism, the study said, is the most geographically concentrated of the eight religious groups analysed in this report. Less than one per cent of Hindus live outside Asia and the Pacific.

India, the report said is home to 11 per cent of the world Muslim population ? the second largest after Indonesia.

The 10 countries with the largest number of Muslims are home to fully two-thirds (66 per cent) of all Muslims.

The largest share lives in Indonesia (13 percent), followed by India (11 percent), Pakistan (11 percent), Bangladesh (8 percent), Nigeria (5 percent), Egypt (5 percent), Iran (5 percent), Turkey (5per cent), Algeria (2 percent) and Morocco (2 percent).

Muslims make up a majority of the population in 49 countries. Nearly three-quarters of all Muslims (73 percent) live in these countries.

Although Muslims are a minority in India (14 percent of the total population), India nonetheless has one of the largest Muslim populations in the world. Pew said India has the largest share (47 percent) of
all members of other religions, including millions of Sikhs and Jains.
