Turkish ex-president's autopsy fuels poisoning speculation

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - An autopsy on late President Turgut Ozal, who led Turkey out of military rule in the 1980s and whose body was exhumed last month, will reveal he was poisoned, his son believes, calling for a full investigation of the "dark years" two decades ago when he died.

Ahmet Ozal was speaking after a newspaper report said high levels of poison had been identified by the autopsy, carried out after his father's body was dug up on the orders of prosecutors investigating suspicions of foul play in his death.

State forensic authorities have denied the media report.

Ozal's moves to end a Kurdish insurgency and create a Turkic union with central Asian states have been cited as motives for would-be enemies in the shadowy "deep state", in which security establishment figures and criminal elements colluded.

Ozal died of heart failure while in office in April 1993 at the age of 65. After undergoing a triple heart bypass operation in the United States in 1987, he kept up a grueling schedule while remaining overweight until he died.

But his family believe he was the victim of a plot.

"Even though 19 years have passed, thanks to technological advances and rigorous investigation they are capable of finding poisonous substances ... I believe they will be found," former member of parliament Ahmet Ozal told Reuters late on Saturday.

"I am 100 percent sure his death was not normal. If it is indeed proven, then Turkey should thoroughly investigate the dark years," he said, noting that top investigative journalist Ugur Mumcu was killed in a car bomb the year Ozal died.

It was Turkey's military leaders who appointed him as a minister after a period of military rule following a 1980 coup.

Ozal went on to dominate Turkish politics during his period as prime minister from 1983-89. Parliament then elected him president, but those close to him believe his reform efforts displeased some in the security establishment.

While prime minister, Ozal survived an assassination attempt by a right-wing gunman in 1988 when he was shot at a party congress, suffering a wounded finger. Ahmet Ozal said he believed there was a cover-up over the assassination attempt.

"If the assassination (attempt) is investigated ... we may see interesting connections to things happening these days. It could also offer an insight into my father death," he said, noting a presidential order would be needed for such an investigation.

Turkish political history has been littered with military coups, alleged anti-government plots and extra-judicial killings. A court is currently trying hundreds of suspects allegedly linked to a nationalist underground network known as "Ergenekon" accused of plotting to overthrow the government.

Turgut Ozal's brother, Korkut Ozal, said in 2010 he believed Ergenekon had killed the president. 'Extrajudicial killings' were common at that time and have been blamed on shadowy militant forces with ties to the state.

STRYCHNINE CLAIM DENIED

Those suspicious about his death have pointed to efforts which Ozal made to end the conflict with Kurdish militants during his time in office, including securing a Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) ceasefire shortly before his death.

A report in Bugun newspaper on Friday said it had obtained a copy of the autopsy which revealed high levels of "strychnine creatine" in Ozal's body.

Strychnine is a highly toxic alkaloid used as a pesticide which causes muscular convulsions and death through asphyxia. Creatine is an organic acid which supplies energy for muscle contraction.

However, the head of the state forensic medicine institute, Haluk Ince, said such a substance had not been found and the report had not yet been completed.

"We did not find the material referred to in the newspaper story. We don't know how that story came about," Ince told reporters in the wake of the Bugun article, adding the institute aimed to complete its work in December.

No post-mortem examination was conducted at the time of Ozal's death, reportedly at the request of his widow.

Viewed as a visionary who helped pave the way for the free market economic policies under which modern Turkey has thrived, Ozal also gave firm support to the West, supporting the U.S.-led coalition which expelled Iraq from Kuwait in 1991.

Ahmet Ozal said his father helped transform Turkey from a coup-torn, state-run economy to the emerging power it is now, boosting freedom of expression, religion and private enterprise.

"This was the foundation that gave birth to modern Turkey. Along with this, perhaps the most important was the transformation of people's mindset. With that you can change anything," he said.

Agape Love Designs & Photography: Fitness 101: MORE Healthy ...

Fitness 101: MORE Healthy Snacks?

By popular request, today I would like to share some more healthier snack option for you!
Check out my first post on creating your own 100 Calorie snacks {here}.

One of the KEY components to reaching your health and fitness goals is your diet. If you do not eat the right things than you will not be able to see the results you are wanting! Yes eating right may be hard at times, and YES it is a HUGE sacrifice. But in the end it will help you to reach your goals. You do not want all of your hard work in the gym to go to waste! Work hard in the gym and reward your body with the right food choices! ?

Yogurt:

Yogurt it one of my favorite snacks to grab and have on a busy day or after the gym. Quick helpful tip? make your own ?Yogurt cups? Buy the BIG container of PLAIN yogurt at the grocery store. Yes I said PLAIN (no flavor, nothing else added) for a even better healthy snack get greek yogurt! Buy small reusable Tupperware (I would suggest the 1-2 cup sizes) OR reuse other containers you may have at home. The suggested serving size is ? - 1 cup of yogurt. Portion out the ? or 1 cup portions of yogurt into your plastic cups. Now here is the fun part?add things like 1 serving size of nuts?1 serving size of fruit?a table spoon of honey or peanut butter. You can pretty much add ANYTHING. This in the end is CHEAPER and HEALTHIER! The pre made yogurt snacks pack more calories and usually more sugar (as well as other things) not to mention they are more expensive. If you portion out a huge tub throw a few of the portions in the freezer! You can let them somewhat thaw out and have and yogurt ?ice cream? treat OR use it for a smoothie for the perfect post workout treat! ?

Popcorn:

Popcorn can be a great quick snack. BUT only if you are eating it the right way! Here are a few tricks that should help you create a HEALTHIER popcorn option to snack on! When you go to the store get a few things: brown paper bags, popcorn kernels (usually found in a big bag) , spices that you may like (Mrs. Dash has an AMAZING Fiesta Lime spice that I regularly use!!) When you get home and you want to create this snack open a brown bag, place about ? cup of the kernels in the bottom of the bag, fold the top of the bag over a few times (do not fold it all the way to the bottom!! I usually fold it over twice just to help keep it closed), place the bag in the microwave and let it pop! The brown paper bag insulates the heat and allows the kernels to pop like in a ?regular? popcorn bag. The time will vary depending on what kind of microwave you have. Usually about 2 minutes is long enough! If it is not, empty out the popped kernels, refold the bag, and toss it back into the microwave. Put the popped popcorn into a bowl and sprinkle your favorite seasonings on it! There are some great low sodium options as well at the grocery store. This is SO MUCH healthier and SO MUCH cheaper than buying the boxes of popcorn at the store. The boxes cost about $4.00 for a box of 4-8 bags of popcorn. The bag of kernels usually cost around $2.00 and the paper bags I got were ?store brand? and cost me $0.99! Not only did it is save me money, but the kernels will give me MORE servings than the premade boxed popcorn!

?Vegetable Chips:

?I have heard so many women at my job RAVE about these new vegetable chips that you can buy at the store. Not only are they just as expensive (if not more) than regular chips, they are also processed and not as good for as you think they are!! MAKE YOUR OWN!! You can do this with almost any vegetable! I have made zucchini, sweet potato, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, apples, even okra! All you have to do is this: Get your desired veggie. MAKE SURE TO CUT THEM INTO THIN SLICES!!! The thinnest you can get them the better! When they cook the moisture will come out and that is how they will become crispy/crunchy. Get a cookie sheet. Spray/wipe with olive oil. Place the veggies on the pan and sprinkle seasonings over the veggies. I usually have the oven on about 300 degrees (you will HAVE TO WATCH AND ADJUST the temperature. Each oven is different. I would start with 250 and work up not going over 350) You will have to watch them because they do indeed cook fairly quick after they have been in the over 20 minutes. Mae sure to watch them so they get as brown/crispy as you would like. I have used knives or slicers that you can get at the local store to get my slices to be thin. It does take a little practice to get them to the thickness that you like. Bake them?sprinkle with a little seasoning?take them out and let them cool. And then ENJOY!!! It is important that you let them cool before you package them!! If not, condensation from the heat will build up and they will NOT be crispy anymore. I hope that these few tips were helpful!?

Please stay tuned for more!!

South Korea fails to thwart activists from sending candy and socks to North Korea

South Korean activists eluded police to float balloons carrying tens of thousands of anti-Pyongyang leaflets (and candy and socks) into North Korea.

Activists in South Korea claimed victory today in their battle to launch tens of thousands of balloons carrying propaganda material to North Korea.

The activists, almost all defectors from North Korea, said they had to skirt South Korean policemen blocking them from their intended launch site and drive to a much less conspicuous site 20 miles south of the border village of Imjingak, the historical tourist area from which they had earlier planned to launch the balloons.?

The activists had chosen Imjingak, which includes a Buddhist shrine, a peace bell, and memorials to those who died in the Korean War, because it is a highly visible site where they could obtain maximum publicity. Local residents objected, however, after North Korea promised ?merciless strikes? on the area, several miles south of the truce village of Panmunjom in the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas.

The alternative site was on Ganghwa Island, at the mouth of the Han River about 30 miles northwest of Seoul. North Korea?s barren countryside is clearly visible on the other side.

The activists said they avoided policemen in their quest for a new launch site, but left the impression that authorities wanted to let them launch their balloons after having put on an appearance of frustrating their first plan. If the police had really wanted to stop them, one analyst noted anonymously, they would have followed them closely and set up new roadblocks.

There were no signs today of any North Korean effort to fire on the site from which balloons laden with about 120,000 leaflets on human rights abuses and dynastic rule under new leader Kim Jong-un were launched. The balloons, wafted northward on wind currents, also dropped off assorted other items ? including dollar bills, candy bars, and socks.

Free North Korea Radio, one of several short-wave stations operated by activists that broadcasts?from here into North Korea, carried several news stories announcing and then justifying the launch.

?We are keeping our promise to the public,? said a statement on the station?s website. ?For the love of our brothers and sisters in North Korea, we cannot postpone this launch.??

Big Island?s Veteran to Farmer program is national pilot, community outreach at its best

The University of Hawai?i at Hilo is a partner in an exciting community-based initiative that addresses the agricultural capacity on the Big Island. The Hawai?i ?Veteran to Farmer? initiative, designed solely for U.S. military veterans and funded by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), is a national pilot program providing certificate level hands-on farming skills training curriculum, classroom-based business training, business start-up support, and health monitoring for veterans.

A key goal of the initiative is to enable veterans to develop the necessary skills to farm. UH Hilo College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resources is proposing a new undergraduate certificate in agriculture designed especially for participants in the Veteran to Farmer program. Completion of the program can enable veterans to create new farm businesses and to meet requirements to acquire leases and loans needed to start a farm. Some participants who complete the certificate program will be ready to pursue a bachelor?s degree at UH Hilo in addition to becoming farmers.

The initiative is part of one of the 29 projects in the Hawai?i Island 21st Century Economy Roadmap, a comprehensive plan for a self-sufficient economy for the island developed by Rivertop Energy Solutions, LLC. Rivertop, headed by CEO David Ruf, is a project planning firm assisting rural communities and federal agencies with the development of sustainable and economically viable business models built on a foundation of indigenous and renewable resources.

With the participation of key community and government stakeholders on the island, Ruff and his team at Rivertop are designing the Hawai?i Veteran to Farmer program as a pilot program for the nation. In addition to Rivertop and UH Hilo, partners in the program include Hawai?i Community College, the State Department of Agriculture, the Hawai?i Island Economic Development Board, the Department of Hawaiian Homelands, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Mealani Research Station, the Pu?ukapu Agricultural Community Facility, Native Hawaiian leaders and organizations, several community-based groups, and local farmers in Waimea on the Big Island.

The certificate program supports UH Hilo?s goal of enhanced outreach to under-represented groups in the communities of North H?m?kua and Waimea. The required courses all presently exist within UH Hilo?s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management and will be taught at the North Hawai?i Education Research Center in Honoka?a, and at WOW Farm, the Mealani Experiment Station, and other agricultural facilities in Waimea with no cost to the university.

The university is working with the VA on the certification for the Veteran to Farmer program, also known as ?Farming for the Working Class,? to allow veterans to use their GI Bill funding to cover tuition for the program. The VA will completely pay for a coordinator, UH Hilo lecturers teaching the courses, other instructional costs, and the participant?s tuition.

The pilot program is now underway with 12 students with the goal of 12 working farms at the end of the pilot. The participants have committed to continuing as instructors beyond their certification so the model can grow exponentially. If each participant helps even just two additional veteran homesteaders with practical hands-on training, there could be 24 additional working farms within the next two years in the rural homestead community of Waimea.

While the pilot focuses on participation by Native Hawaiian veterans, non-native veterans are eligible to participate. This is truly a community empowerment and community economic development model that can grow exponentially in a relatively short period to address our food security and economic development challenges in our own rural communities while serving as a model for the country.
